Las Perlas Islands

Originally placed on the map because of the many fine pearls found here beginning in 1513, you’ve no doubt heard of this area more recently as the location for one of the very popular “Survivor” series. Just 40 nautical miles from Panama City, the archipelago is made up of ten larger islands sporting 83 beaches each bathed by the turquoise waters of the Pacific.

Once a strategic area for the protection of the Panama Canal after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, it has since become the getaway of choice for the Panama City elite. Ex-Presidents Jimmy Carter and Adolfo Suarez of Spain used to holiday here. The Shah of Iran took asylum on one of the islands in 1979. More recently, you might have spotted the world famous singer, Julio Iglesias, watching the same sunsets you are now.

Besides the obvious pleasures of being a total beach bum, the Las Perlas are also particularly noted for some of the best sites for sports fishing. Small resorts, rustic hotels, private villas ... the choice is yours.
